Your profile picture, name and progress bar sit over the top of a Story, and the reply box and buttons cover the bottom. Keep text, logos and faces out of roughly the top 250 px and the bottom 340 px of the 1080×1920 frame. The middle 1080×1330 area is always clear. Reels have the caption, audio name and buttons on the bottom and right, so keep key content a little higher and away from the right edge.
Uploading a photo that is already 1080×1920 stops Instagram from zooming in and cropping it on its own.
Reels use the same 1080×1920 vertical frame. Shoot vertically at 1080p or higher, at 30 frames per second or more. A 4:5 or square video can be posted as a Reel, but it shows with bars above and below, so resize the cover image and any graphics to 9:16 first.

"Fill" center-crops when the ratio differs. "Fit" pads with the chosen color. "Fit width" keeps the height ratio, for detail pages.
