National Do Not Call Registry registration
Register a personal home or mobile number with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) National Do Not Call Registry for free. The list tells law-abiding telemarketers not to make covered sales calls to your number. It is not a call-blocking service and cannot stop every scam call.
Who runs the National Do Not Call Registry?
The FTC operates the consumer registry at DoNotCall.gov. It gives you a way to register personal numbers against covered telemarketing sales calls. A charge from someone offering to put your number on the list is not the registry registration fee.
Use the consumer registration or verification options rather than the separate access service for sellers and telemarketers. Those are different users of the registry.
How do I register my home or cell phone?
Choose Register Your Phone on the registry website and enter the number and email information requested. For online registration, open the confirmation email and click the link within 72 hours. Repeat the confirmation for each number you register.
If you are unsure whether the number is already listed, use Verify Your Registration first. Existing registrations do not expire, so another registration is unnecessary merely because calls have increased.
What is the Do Not Call registration phone number?
Call 888-382-1222 from the phone number you want to register. The automated route uses the calling number, so calling from a different phone is not a substitute for registering the intended line. TTY access is 866-290-4236.
The website is an alternative if the phone system cannot verify the number. Registration is free through either route; keep it separate from a paid call-filtering product offered by another company.

How long does registration take?
The FTC says a number should appear on the registry the next day, while covered sales calls can take up to 31 days to stop. Use the verification option to check the registration itself.
Wait for the relevant period before judging whether a covered telemarketer ignored the list. A registration confirmation is evidence about the list entry, not evidence that your telephone carrier has activated call blocking.
Why do I still get calls after registering?
The registry relies on callers following telemarketing rules. Scammers making illegal calls may ignore it. The list does not technically prevent a call from reaching the phone, so registration cannot promise a permanent end to spam.
Some calls remain outside its sales-call restrictions, including qualifying political, charitable, survey, debt-collection, and informational calls. A prior business relationship or permission can also matter. The kind of call is more important than simply counting how many calls arrived.
Where do I report calls that continue?
DoNotCall.gov has a separate unwanted-call reporting service. If you lost money to a scam or have information about the scammer, the FTC also directs people to ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Registering a number does not file either kind of report.
Keep the displayed caller number, any callback number, the date and time, and what the caller wanted. Caller ID can be spoofed, but the FTC still asks for the information shown. A report contributes to enforcement; it is not a promise of an individual response or reimbursement.
FAQ
Do registrations expire?
No. You do not need to renew an unchanged registered number. Disconnected and reassigned numbers can be removed.
Can I register a business or fax number?
The consumer registry covers personal phone numbers, not business numbers or fax lines.
