How do I check IRS refund status?

Open the IRS refund tracker and choose the tax year. Enter the Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number, filing status, and exact refund amount requested. Use the amount on the return rather than a bank deposit after any preparation charges.

You can instead sign in to your Individual Online Account to view refund information and available notifications. These are two access routes to IRS information, so you do not need to buy a refund-status service or file another return to use the public tracker.

How long are IRS refunds taking?

The IRS describes a typical refund period of three weeks for an e-filed return and six or more weeks from receipt of a mailed return. These periods are not a promise for every return. The tracker provides a personalized date after processing and approval.

The date when tracking first becomes available is different. Start checking 24 hours after a current-year electronic filing or four weeks after a paper filing. Prior-year electronic returns can need several days before appearing. Read the timing for the year and filing method you actually used.

Why is my refund accepted but not approved?

The tracker separates Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent. Receiving or accepting a return means it entered the process. Approval means the IRS has finished the review needed to release that refund.

An acceptance message from filing software is not the same as Refund Approved in the IRS tracker. Keep the return, filing confirmation, and any IRS notice together so you can distinguish submission, review, and payment.

What if 21 days have passed and there is no refund?

Check the tracker for your specific instructions. A return can need corrections or extra review because of errors, an unsigned paper return, identity concerns, an amended return, or an injured-spouse request. Waiting longer than a typical period does not identify the cause by itself.

If the IRS contacts you for information, respond through the route on that notice. If the tracker directs you to contact the IRS, have the return and notice ready. Do not send a duplicate return simply because the refund has not arrived.

Why is my refund smaller or larger than expected?

A refund can be reduced for eligible debts, including prior taxes. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends notice of a debt offset. The IRS may also correct a return and send a notice explaining an adjustment.

Read the notice before assuming a payment is missing. A reduced refund, a delayed refund, and a refund check that never arrived are different problems. The refund help page describes the trace process for a lost or stolen check, including separate instructions for joint filers.

Where do I check an amended-return refund?

Where’s My Refund does not track the Form 1040-X amended-return process. Use the separate amended-return status service. That distinction matters even when the amended return is expected to produce another refund.

For past income or filing information, obtain the appropriate tax transcript. Ordering a transcript is not a method of speeding up refund processing, and a tax record is not a substitute for the tracker’s instructions about your refund.

FAQ

Does the normal refund tracker show my amended return?

Use Where’s My Amended Return for Form 1040-X. It has a separate processing and tracking timetable.

Will a tax transcript give me a guaranteed payment date?

The IRS recommends the refund tracker for refund status. A transcript serves a different tax-record purpose.
