Internal Revenue Service services and contact

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) handles federal tax administration. Choose the service for the record, return, business identifier, or payment issue you have. A filing tool, a status tracker, and an account record each answer different questions.

Where do I check my IRS refund or amended return?

Use Where’s My Refund? guidance for a refund from an original individual income tax return. Use Where’s My Amended Return? guidance for an amended return. Choose based on which return you are following, even if both relate to the same tax year.

A transcript is an account record. It may help explain recorded tax activity, but the transcript service and refund tracker serve different purposes. Keep the tax year and return type clear when choosing a tool.

Where can I find IRS Free File?

The Free File page explains the guided-software and Fillable Forms routes, including current availability. The IRS currently says Free File is closed and will return in January 2027. Check that service page before planning a filing session; a link to the program does not mean the current filing season is open.

Which IRS service issues an EIN?

Use the EIN application guide for an Employer Identification Number. That service concerns the business tax identifier. It is separate from accessing your individual tax records or tracking a personal refund. The application route depends on the location of the business and the responsible party’s identifying information.

Where do I ask for an IRS payment plan?

Use the payment-plan guide for the individual Online Payment Agreement route, eligibility, and fees. The service helps with paying a balance over time. If the question concerns an IRS notice, read its instructions and use the corresponding help category rather than assuming that applying for a plan resolves the notice itself.

How do I contact the IRS about my tax issue?

Open the IRS help and contact entry in the service list. Its categories include refunds, payments, notices, tax records, business issues, and identity theft. Choose the category that matches the question before selecting phone or local-office assistance.

The help page also provides language assistance and links for accessible copies of forms or notices. If a mailed return or letter has not produced a response, the IRS directs taxpayers to its current operations and expected-wait information. Keep the relevant notice and tax year available when choosing an assistance route.

What you can do at IRS

  • Check an individual federal tax refund using the IRS refund tracker or your Individual Online Account. Amended returns have a separate status tool.

  • Download available personal tax transcripts through the IRS Individual Online Account or request eligible transcript types by mail.

  • Get an employer identification number directly from the IRS without an application fee. Eligible domestic entities can use the online application.

  • Eligible individuals can apply online for a short-term payment plan or monthly installment agreement. Interest and applicable penalties continue until payment is complete.
