Citizenship application with Form N-400
Form N-400 is the application for U.S. citizenship through naturalization. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) accepts online or paper filing from eligible applicants. Choose your eligibility category before preparing the application; holding a Green Card alone does not settle every requirement.
When can I file my citizenship application?
Start with the eligibility checker and instructions linked from the N-400 page. The filing basis determines the residence period and evidence. The five-year permanent-resident route and the three-year route for qualifying spouses of U.S. citizens are distinct categories; three years with a Green Card does not by itself establish eligibility under the marriage category.
USCIS permits filing up to 90 calendar days before completing the continuous-residence requirement in those qualifying five-year and three-year categories. Check the remaining requirements and your exact eligibility date before using early filing. The rule does not excuse other eligibility conditions.
How much does an N-400 cost?
| Filing route | Fee | How to file |
|---|---|---|
| Full fee, online | $710 | USCIS online account |
| Full fee, paper | $760 | Mail the signed application |
| Eligible reduced-fee request | $380 | Paper application with supporting evidence |
| Eligible fee-waiver request | No filing fee if approved | Paper application with I-912 or qualifying written request and evidence |
A reduced fee and a fee waiver require eligibility evidence. USCIS does not accept either request with an online N-400 application. For the reduced fee, complete the relevant fee section of N-400 and include the supporting records. For a waiver, follow the I-912 or written-request instructions.
What documents do I need for Form N-400?
Use the checklist for your filing basis. It includes a copy of both sides of the Green Card, where applicable, and records relevant to marriage, name changes, residence, or other answers. Some applicants need additional records, such as court dispositions. The checklist is a preparation aid; the form instructions control which records your application needs.
Documents in a foreign language need a complete English translation and the translator’s certification of accuracy and competence. Do not send originals unless USCIS specifically requires them. For paper filing, keep all pages from the same current form edition, retain the page numbers, and sign the application.

Where do I send my N-400 application for naturalization?
For online filing, use File Online on the N-400 page and a USCIS online account. For paper filing, follow the Direct Filing Addresses link on that page and choose the address matching your circumstances and delivery method. There is no single mailing address that this page can assign to every applicant.
Save the submission confirmation and receipt notice. Follow any biometrics appointment, evidence request, interview, or other case notice. A paper applicant may also create an online account using the account-acceptance instructions USCIS mails.
Does filing an N-400 extend your green card?
After proper filing, the N-400 receipt notice extends the Green Card for two years from its printed expiration date. Present the receipt together with the card as evidence of permanent resident status. This is different from the extension associated with an I-90 renewal receipt.
If the Green Card is lost, USCIS says you generally still need Form I-90 even with a pending naturalization application. See the I-90 guide for the distinction between renewing or replacing a card and applying for citizenship.
How long does it take to get citizenship after filing N-400?
USCIS does not give one guaranteed completion date for every N-400. Check the processing-times service for the relevant case and office, and use your online account or receipt-number case status to follow updates. Filing, interview, approval, and the oath stage are separate events; submitting N-400 does not itself make you a citizen.
