USCIS case status by receipt number
Use Case Status Online to look up the most recent action on a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) application or petition. The public lookup uses the receipt number on your USCIS notice. You can also view available cases and documents through your USCIS online account.
How do I check USCIS case status online?
Find the 13-character receipt number on a USCIS notice. It normally begins with three letters, such as IOE, followed by ten numbers. Enter the number without dashes. Keep any other character, including an asterisk, if it is part of the receipt as printed.
Submit the number in Case Status Online and read the full message. If you have another receipt, check it separately. Keep the notice available if the tool rejects the entry, so you can compare the number character by character.
How do I see my case in a USCIS account?
The public lookup and a USCIS online account are different tools. The account can provide case updates and access to electronically filed applications. Start with the account you used to file, if you filed online.
An account sign-in problem is different from a receipt-number lookup problem. You can use the public status tool without solving every account issue first. If you cannot see a case inside the account, use the receipt notice to check its public status and follow USCIS account-help instructions.
Does a status update mean USCIS is reviewing my case?
The public system shows the latest recorded action and any next steps. Read exactly what it says, including whether USCIS is asking you to act. A receipt or review message is not an approval notice.
Several applications can be pending at once. A new message on a work-authorization application does not by itself resolve a naturalization application or green-card renewal. Keep the receipt number with each message when comparing updates.

How long is USCIS taking right now?
There is no one processing time for all USCIS cases. The case-status page links to processing-time and case-inquiry tools. Use the form and case information requested by those tools rather than counting from another applicant’s reported result.
A period without a visible change does not establish a decision date. Use the case-inquiry eligibility date provided for your case when deciding whether to send an inquiry. If USCIS requests information, follow the notice and its deadline instead of waiting for a different status message.
Can I call USCIS to check my status?
The USCIS Contact Center number listed with its case-status guidance is 800-375-5283. Have the relevant receipt notice and a clear question ready. Identify whether you need help with the status, a notice, or access to your account.
Keep your mailing address current using the USCIS address-change process. Refreshing the status lookup does not notify the agency that you moved. For a new filing, use the appropriate green-card renewal or citizenship application instructions rather than treating a status lookup as an application.
FAQ
Can I use my A-Number instead of the receipt number?
The public case-status lookup requires the receipt number for the particular case. Use the number on the receipt notice rather than substituting an A-Number.
Should I check more than one receipt?
Yes, if USCIS issued separate receipts for separate applications. A status for one receipt does not establish the result of another case.
