Green card renewal with Form I-90
Use Form I-90 to renew a 10-year Green Card that has expired or will expire within six months. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) accepts online and paper applications. A two-year conditional card requires a different process to remove conditions.
Do green card holders need to renew their green cards?
For a 10-year card, check the expiration date printed on the document. USCIS directs lawful permanent residents to replace a card that has expired or will expire within the next six months. I-90 renews the card; it is not an application for citizenship.
Check whether your card is conditional before paying. An expiring two-year conditional card uses the removal-of-conditions process, such as Form I-751 or I-829 where applicable. Filing I-90 does not substitute for that petition. A lost or incorrect card is another filing reason, with evidence and fee rules that may differ from an ordinary renewal.
How much does it cost to renew an I-90 form?
The general I-90 filing fee is $415 online or $465 on paper. Select I-90 in the USCIS fee schedule and match the reason for filing. Certain replacements, including qualifying government errors, have different fee treatment. Do not apply a no-fee replacement category to an ordinary expiring-card renewal.
If requesting a fee waiver, follow the I-90 page and Form I-912 instructions for the permitted filing route and supporting evidence. Use the current payment instructions when mailing a form; the online price does not apply to a paper submission.
How do I file a green card renewal online?
- Open the I-90 form page and choose File Online, or use its current paper form and filing instructions.
- Select the correct filing reason and enter the information from your existing card and immigration record.
- Include the supporting evidence required for that reason, review the application, and provide the required signature and payment or eligible fee request.
- Save the receipt notice. Read subsequent notices, including any biometrics appointment instructions.
Online filing uses a USCIS online account. For paper filing, use the current edition and the address specified by USCIS for your mailing method. Keep your mailing address current while the application is pending so that notices and the replacement card reach you.

Does the I-90 receipt extend my expired green card?
For a renewal application, USCIS says the receipt notice presented with the expired Green Card provides evidence of permanent resident status and work authorization for 36 months from the expiration date on the card. The receipt is used together with the card, and the period runs from card expiry rather than the receipt date.
If you no longer have the card and need temporary evidence of status, USCIS may issue an ADIT stamp after filing. Contact USCIS for that evidence route. A renewal receipt is not a biometrics appointment notice; USCIS sends appointment instructions separately if needed.
What is the processing time for an I-90 renewal?
Use the USCIS processing-times service for Form I-90 and the category that applies to your case. The renewal page does not promise one completion time for every applicant. Keep the receipt number to check the recorded case status and follow any request for evidence or appointment notice.
FAQ
Can I use the same form if the card was lost?
I-90 also covers several replacement reasons, but the evidence and fee depend on the reason. Choose the applicable reason rather than treating every replacement as an expiring-card renewal.
Does the receipt period start on the day I file?
The renewal extension described by USCIS runs from the expiration date printed on the Green Card.
