Passport application for a first adult U.S. passport
A first adult U.S. passport requires an in-person application using Form DS-11. Prepare the form before the visit, but wait to sign until the acceptance agent tells you. The U.S. Department of State also uses DS-11 for adults whose previous passport cannot be renewed.
Can I apply for my first passport online?
The Form Filler at pptform.state.gov prepares a form to print. It does not complete a first-time passport application. You still bring the printed form and documents to an acceptance facility.
Use passport renewal if you already hold a passport that meets renewal requirements. A damaged, lost, or stolen passport, or one issued too long ago or before age 16, follows the in-person route.
What documents do I need for a first passport?
- Unsigned DS-11, printed single-sided.
- Physical U.S. citizenship evidence and a photocopy.
- Physical photo identification, plus photocopies of its front and back.
- One passport photo meeting State Department requirements.
- Payment for the application fee and the separate acceptance fee.
Citizenship evidence can include a qualifying U.S. birth certificate, a naturalization or citizenship certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or an eligible previous passport. A digital birth certificate is insufficient. If your documents do not establish citizenship, follow the citizenship-evidence guidance before the appointment.
When do I sign DS-11 and where do I submit it?
- Find a passport acceptance facility and check its appointment requirements.
- Complete DS-11 and assemble the documents and copies.
- Attend in person with the application and payments.
- Sign the form only when the acceptance agent instructs you.
Many post offices accept passport applications, but not every postal counter provides passport services. The State Department facility finder shows acceptance locations. An ordinary acceptance appointment differs from an urgent-travel appointment at a passport agency.

Why are there two passport application fees?
| Adult document | Application fee | Acceptance fee |
|---|---|---|
| Book | $130 | $35 |
| Card | $30 | $35 |
| Book and card | $160 | $35 |
The application fee goes to the State Department; the acceptance fee goes to the facility. Ask the facility which payments it accepts. Photo services and faster processing or delivery can add charges. Form Filler access itself does not require payment.
Will the post office take my passport photo?
Check whether your chosen facility provides photos and whether that service needs a separate reservation. Otherwise bring a compliant photo. The required printed photo is in color, taken within six months, and two inches square. Review the photo examples before paying for a picture or submitting one.
How long does a first passport application take?
Routine processing is four to six weeks; expedited processing is two to three weeks for an additional $60. Delivery time is outside those estimates. An application needing more evidence can take longer.
For urgent international travel, use the State Department urgent-appointment route. If you already applied, call 877-487-2778 when travel is within 14 days. Use passport application status to follow the application already submitted rather than filing another one.
