Can I renew an expired passport online?
An expired passport can qualify. For online renewal, the passport must have had 10-year validity and must expire within a year or have expired less than five years ago. You must be at least 25, have the undamaged passport, and meet all the remaining online requirements.
You must be in a U.S. state or territory when submitting, keep your personal information unchanged, and have no travel planned for at least six weeks. A passport reported lost or stolen is ineligible. If you need a new passport after a loss, use an in-person DS-11 application.
Should I renew my passport online or by mail?
| Method | What you submit | Previous passport |
|---|---|---|
| Online | Your application, digital photo, and card payment at opr.travel.state.gov | Keep it; it will be canceled |
| Signed DS-82, photo, eligible passport, payment, and any required name-change evidence | Enclose the required passport document |
Mail renewal has different eligibility rules. Your most recent passport generally must have been issued within 15 years, when you were at least 16, and have had 10-year validity. You must be able to submit it. A certified legal name-change document can support a changed name by mail; online renewal does not allow that change.
For mail renewal, print DS-82 on single-sided paper, sign and date it, then assemble the documents and payment. Use the mailing address on the State Department renewal instructions for your service level. The Form Filler prepares the form; it does not submit a mail application.
How much does passport renewal cost?
The renewal application fee is $130 for a book, $30 for a card, or $160 for both. Eligible DS-82 renewals do not have the $35 acceptance fee charged with DS-11 applications.
For renewal by mail, pay with a check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State. Online renewal accepts credit or debit card payment. Expedited processing adds $60 when available. Faster return delivery is a separate purchase and does not shorten the application review.

How long does passport renewal take?
Current routine processing takes four to six weeks; expedited processing takes two to three weeks. These periods exclude delivery. A mailed application can take up to two weeks to reach processing, and return delivery can take another two weeks.
Count from receipt by the passport processing agency, rather than from the day you fill out a form. Other applicants receiving documents sooner does not change your own deadline. Follow your application status and any request for additional documents.
Can I expedite an online passport renewal?
Expedited processing is unavailable when you submit an online renewal. If you have already applied and your travel changes, call the National Passport Information Center at 877-487-2778 to discuss available options.
For international travel within 14 days, an agency visit requires an appointment. Applicants who already submitted an application should call rather than submit another renewal. Appointment availability is limited.
Can I take my own passport renewal photo?
Online renewal requires a digital passport photo that meets the State Department specifications. Renewal does not relax the photo requirements. Have someone take it rather than taking a selfie. Use an unedited image with an appropriate plain background and lighting. A printed photo is required for renewal by mail.
If the agency requests a replacement photo or another document, follow that request. Uploading an image successfully does not replace the agency review.
FAQ
Do I send my old passport with an online renewal?
No. Keep it when renewing online, but do not use it after it is canceled. Mail renewal requires the eligible passport with your application.
Can I renew a passport issued before age 16?
Use a new in-person application. Child passports issued before age 16 cannot be renewed with DS-82.
Can I keep using my passport after renewing online?
The passport being renewed is canceled after submission and cannot be used for international travel.
