U.S. Department of State passport services and contact
The U.S. Department of State issues U.S. passports. Its Passport Services pages connect applicants to renewal, application forms, loss reports, and status tools. Select the service for the task you need to complete, then check the requirements for that task.
Where do I start a passport application or renewal?
Start with DS-11 application guidance for a first adult passport or a passport that cannot be renewed. Use renewal guidance for an eligible existing adult passport. Online renewal and the Form Filler serve different purposes, so arriving at one of those tools does not establish eligibility for the other route.
Which passport tools handle forms and status?
The Form Filler prepares passport forms. The online renewal service accepts eligible renewal applications. The application status tool follows work already submitted. Keep an application confirmation distinct from a form you have only printed or downloaded.
When a valid passport is missing, use the loss-report route. That report concerns the existing document; it is separate from an application for another passport.
What is the passport customer service phone number?
Call the National Passport Information Center at 877-487-2778. Representatives work Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET, and weekends, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. ET, excluding federal holidays. TDD/TTY service is available at 888-874-7793.

Who helps when I already applied and travel is near?
If you already applied and international travel is within 14 days, call the center. An agency visit requires an appointment. If you have not applied, the contact page provides the online urgent-appointment route. Read the instructions for your existing application status before selecting a booking method.
Is a post office passport appointment a State Department appointment?
A passport acceptance facility receives applications on the Department's behalf. A passport agency or center handles qualifying urgent travel by appointment. These are different appointments. Choose based on the application route and travel timing rather than the nearest address alone.
